  • Hi Robert,

that's an incredibly broad question! Do that want to know how the collection is physically managed, or what types of finding aids are used?

    kind regards

  • whats the hardest part of your job when it comes to these items. i.e your example of photographs and how keeping them in mint condition is hard.
what also would you say about your job that makes it interesting?
  • thank you so much you made me a happy man.

    cheers robert
  • Hi Robert
Would be interested in discussing formats to keep for sound and image.

    Sound.
We have original cassettes converted to wav for archive and mp3 for ease of use. I can’t see the point in keeping cassettes. The wav inevitably has poor sound quality and huge size that out Records Management system can’t cope with so I’m keeping them on archival CDs without telling IT as I have to use the RMS. I put mp3s on CDs for loan but some are regular sound CDs that I’m phasing out, with no complaints so far. Might use SoundCloud but that’s not archival.
    Just too many media forms!!

Should I convert images received as jpg to tif for archiving? I don’t but think I should as I suspect that the ‘cloud’ copies jpg a lot so resolution will be lost.

It’s that archival principle of keeping the original that’s tough.
