Fund Raising and philanthropy

I've been asked to explore what other Archives and collecting institutions are doing around fund raising and encouraging donations/philanthropic gestures for funding specific or general projects.

UOW Archives frequently receives offers of material, rare books, not so rare books and archival collections of one kind or another, but nothing much in the way of cash donations comes our way.

We are part of the University's gift fund (so donations are tax deductible) and periodically our Advancement Division  promote us as a potential source of giving, however the competition for the philanthropy dollar is pretty intense.

So, have you or your organisation been successful in attracting cash donations? Would you be comfortable sharing the experience?

Some discussion points could be around, were the funds designated to a particular collection or activity - say for example conservation or digitisation?

Was the donation the result of a long term relationship or was it unexpected?

Do you have a mechanism for accepting cash donations, such as paypal or similar for casual acts of pnhilanthropy?

Thanks

Grant
