Hello ASA

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, based in Johannesburg, is looking for a Digital Preservation Mentor as part of the Australian Volunteer Program. Originally taken up by Tenille Hands (National Sound & Film Archive/UNSW), I have been working in the role for the past 8 months migrating collections and developing workflow procedures.  It's an amazing opportunity for someone to learn about South Africa and its history while contributing their skills and knowledge to the preservation of Mandela's life and times collection.

Roles and responsibilities of the role are:

  • Assist in monitoring and quality control of all digital preservation, access and records platforms.
  • Coordinate upgrade processes and troubleshooting of current installlations of digital preservation, access and records management software.
  • Train NMF archive and records staff to troubleshoot upgrade and data migration issues.
  • Mentor in Investigating cloud-base, localised and off-site storage and support solutions, developing the capacity of staff to self-manage this via workshops, user manuals and explainer videos.
  • Develop and/or maintain partnerships with local, regional and international organisations, local and national government, professional and peer networks
