  • Hi Dayl

We've recently ordered the Epson Perfection V850 Pro Scanner, to upgrade from our current scanner.  We haven't received it yet, but we are looking forward to using it.

  • Hi Dayl,

We use the Epson Perfection V850 Pro Scanner - great for negatives, slides, medium format and photographs and images up to A4.

  • With thousands of pre-digital-camera print photos to scan we use the Epson FastFoto FF-680W - essentially on the grounds that its considerable cost will soon be covered by the much-reduced staff time required to digitise.

The associated software offers a very limited choice of resolutions: 300 or 600ppi (maximum optical) or 1200ppi (interpolated) in either JPG or TIF formats. Also includes the handy selectable option to simultaneously scan back of print photo.

Regular cleaning of rollers etc is essential but quickly becomes routine. Works well with clean, flat prints; not so smooth handling of curved or even-slightly-sticky prints.

I haven't compared the scan quality with our flatbed scanners but assume the latter should be superior in some ways. I still have the option to create higher specs scans of selected prints on the flatbeds if/when required. For now though, we are creating very serviceable digital versions of a large number of prints.

That said, I probably wouldn't take this path if my time/money/productivity equation allowed a slow-and-steady-ish flatbed scanner approach.

  • We have a lot of 35mm negatives on strips.

I bought a Pacific Image PowerFilm Scanner from B&H in the US. No local supplier

Pluses. Image quality and speed excellent. Included photo enhancement and filing software very good.

Minuses: In theory handles up to 10 strips of 6 images via a doc feeder. In practice, this wasn't set and forget. I needed to keep an eye on it and give a nudge to clear jams more often than I would have liked.

However, better than having to load a tray with negatives for every batch and then needing to manipulate the images.

  • Hi Dayl

We use an Epson FastFoto FF-680W Wireless High-Speed Photo and Document Scanning System.

It can do up to 1200dpi and with its bulk feed it can scan a photo a second at 300dpi.

    Hope this help.

    Thanks

  • We use the Epson V700 as well. It has been really good and very reliable.  We have been able to use it  to scan a range of material including slides, negatives and magic lantern slides.

  • We also use the V700

  • Thanks Sharon! I'll look into it.

  • Hi Dayl

I've used an Epson Perfection V series photo scanner for about 7 years and it's a little ripper. I have the V550 series and I think they're up to about the V800 (not sure).

You can get the V550 series I think for about $479, a V600 for about $549 and the V800 about $999.

They are a flat bed scanner A4, not sure if they do an A3.

They also scan negatives and have quite a few other bells and whistles for photo scanning adjustments.

I've found mine super reliable, never had a problem with it.
