Come and join the WA Branch to hear highlights about two key archives conferences, the International Council on Archives Congress (ICA) held in Seoul in September 2016, and the ASA National Conference held in Parramatta 17 to 21 October 2016.

Also, take the opportunity to meet the new ASA WA Branch Committee and hear our plans for the ASA WA membership.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Laura Millar from Canada

Laura is the keynote speaker at the ASA Conference and was in the Program Committee for ICA Conference in Seoul. For more details about Laura click here.

Title: Teetering on a Two-Legged Stool: The Perils and Potentials of Canada's Archival System

Abstract: In this presentation, Canadian archival consultant and independent scholar Laura Millar comments on Canada's archival system, considering the benefits and challenges of national efforts to centralise and control archival initiatives. Reflecting on activities in Canada as well as in Australia and internationally, through the lens of the recent ICA and ASA conferences, Laura speculates on the future of archival development, arguing that greater public engagement will be critical to success, even if increased public input into the archival endeavour places at risk the long-standing emphasis — in Canada, at least -- on custodial-based archival operations.

Refreshments: Nibbles and Drinks will be available.

Event Sponsor: Department of Information Studies, Curtin University

If you have any further questions please contact WA Branch secretary Gerard Foley by email.

After the event, attendees are invited to join Dr Laura Millar and other WA Branch members for dinner at the Dusit Thai Restarant. The Dusit Thai is about a ten minute walk from the SRO and is both licenced and byo. Meals would be from the a la carte menu and it will be investigated whether or not individual billing is possible, otherwise the cost will be split amongst the diners. If you are interested please note this in the additional info form in the registration.

Registrations

Please register through the ASA website to help with planning for this event, registrations close Thursday, 20 October 2016. Note that the fees will be collected at the door, and not through the ASA website.

  • Laura's final keynote at the ASA conference in Parramatta contained challenges for us all to forge links, and to revamp the way in which archivy is seen and promoted generally. Very inspirational!
