The Victorian Branch invites you to register for a guest presentation by Cathy Mulhall and Marija Bacic, Image Management and Copyright Unit, Museums Victoria
The battle between easy digital access to artistic material versus the rights of creators has been hotly debated over the last 10 years, leading to small changes in copyright law. GLAM institutions in Australia have had to choose between abiding strictly to copyright law and providing slow, piecemeal digital access to their collections, or adopting the more risky approach of wholesale digitisation and publication of collections for public access, regardless of possibly breaching copyright.
This seminar will look at the copyright law of Australia, and compare it to real-life situations encountered by Museums Victoria’s Copyright Officers. How do you manage the risk of information? How do you manage a family member claiming they hold copyright in material donated and approved by a different family member? And how do you make sure your colleagues understand the risks?
Marija and Cathy will share stories from the frontline of copyright defence, and explore situations where the practicalities of public access and copyright clash.
