University of Canberra Professional Development Courses Preserving Paper Collections & Introduction to Paper Conservation
The University of Canberra is offering two 1-Day courses in Paper Preservation and Conservation. The courses can be taken separately but are designed to be complementary. Both courses are led by UC lecturer Ian Batterham who has 40 years experience in the field of paper conservation. Ian is a Professional member of the AICCM and a Fellow of the IIC.
Course 1: Preserving Paper Collections
Date: Tuesday 27 March 2018
Time: 9 am to 5 pm
Learn on how to keep your paper-based collection (archive, library, art on paper) safe, secure and preserved for the future. In this course you will learn:
• How paper is made, how it ages and what makes it deteriorate
• The preservation issues facing paper-based collections
• How to plan and prioritise the preservation of a paper-based collection
• The best ways of packaging, handling, copying, storing and transporting paper items
Course 2: Introduction to Paper Conservation
Date: Wednesday 28 March 2018
Time: 9 am to 5 pm
This course is aimed at giving emerging paper conservators and people who care for paper-based collections a deeper insight into paper conservation practice. You will be given:
• Background information on the history of paper, art printing, commercial printing and document types
• An introduction to paper conservation practice including surface cleaning, washing, deacidification, flattening and repair
General information for both days Venue: UC Heritage Laboratory, Building 27C18, Bruce Campus.
For each course attendees will be given:
• Useful information and contacts for future reference
• Course booklet (digital)
• Certification of Attendance
• Lunch and morning and afternoon tea
